NEWARK--Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball coach Joe Loughran captured his 100th career victory with an 82-80 NJAC win over Ramapo on December 3. Loughran’s 100 victories are the most in the Division III history of the program, while his triumph over the Roadrunners ties him with former head coach Jim Hill for the most conference wins in school history with 41.

Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Scarlet Raider program, Loughran has guided Rutgers-Newark to an overall record of 100-92.

Loughran has led the Raiders to five straight winning regular seasons, and the three most successful seasons in school history with back-to-back-to-back 18 win seasons 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. In 2007-08, the Scarlet Raiders made their fourth straight appearance in the ECAC Metro Championship.

The Scarlet Raiders earned berths in three consecutive NJAC Tournaments (2005, 2006, and 2007) reaching the semifinal round all three times. Under Loughran’s leadership, the Raiders posted four consecutive winning records for the first time in the program’s Division III history.

EWING--TCNJ Athletic Director John Castaldo has announced the appointment of 1993 graduate Kelly Williams to direct its men’s basketball program. Williams, who played for the Lions from 1989 to 1993 and served as an assistant men’s coach with the Lions, returns to his alma mater and will assume his new role on July 1.

“The opportunity to represent the College as an alumni and former player has always been a dream,” Williams said. “I’m excited just to have the tradition of TCNJ’s basketball program continue to grow under my direction.”

Williams takes over TCNJ’s program after successful nine-year tenure (1999-2008) at Mercer County College when he compiled a record of 154-100. During that time he led the Vikings to six Garden State Athletic Conference championships and three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II, Region XIX Finals appearances advancing one of those years to the District IX playoffs. In 2000, he was honored as the Junior College, Division II/III Coaching Staff of the Year by the New Jersey Collegiate Basketball Coaches Association.

Williams has strong ties to the Ewing campus as he played for the Lions from 1989-1993 and was graduated from the College in 1993 with a bachelor of arts in sociology. He returned to his alma mater as an assistant under John Castaldo at the College from 1995-99. In addition to his familiarity with TCNJ’s basketball program throughout the years, he has been employed at the College since 1995 where he has most recently served as an assistant director in the Office of Admissions.

“Kelly brings a wealth of basketball experience to our program,” Castaldo said. “Kelly is already entrenched in the College’s mission and his character, integrity and professionalism provide for the leadership building qualities we aspire to achieve within our department. As a former TSC student-athlete and former TCNJ assistant basketball coach, I have witnessed firsthand his drive, and his desire to succeed both on and off the court. His passion for the game and more importantly for TCNJ is highly evident,” he continued. “His success at Mercer County Community College both as a coach, a leader and a role model was remarkable. Kelly’s community ties and alumni relationships will enhance his efforts and the efforts of TCNJ. When we added up all of these qualities, Kelly was the top choice for the position. We are ecstatic to have him join our department.”

Prior to his playing career for the Lions, Williams was a standout at Ewing High School and in 2008 was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame. He is an active member National Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association.

Williams inherits a team that challenged for a spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference late into the season and has 12 players eligible to return.

MONTCLAIR--Montclair State junior men’s basketball player Maurice Torres was presented with the NCOS Giant Steps Courageous Athlete Award for 2007 at the National Consortium for Academics and Sports' Annual Conference (NCOS) on January 28 at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, FL.

Also honored in various categories are Women’s World Cup Soccer champion Julie Foudy; legendary women’s basketball coach Jody Conradt of the University of Texas; Boston University standouts Brittany and A.J. Detwiler; former Army football player Johnnie Williams; The Miracle League; and the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball Team. Other past award recipients include basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Senator Bill Bradley, and Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

“Maurice is a young man of great character. He is always willing to give of himself to benefit others,” said Tara Rienecker, Coordinator of Student Development for Athletes. “This quality has transcended in his home life, to the basketball court, with his fellow student-athletes, and in the community. I am extremely excited he has been chosen to receive this prestigious award.”

As four-year-old child, Torres and his mother were homeless and slept in alleyways on cold nights, while his sisters stayed with relatives. His early years exposed him to witness drug use, violence, and prostitution.

Eventually moved to the foster care system, Torres kept in his mind his mother’s desire to “keep the family together,” a responsibility that made a strong impression on the five-year-old. Over the next few weeks, they were moved from home to home until they found a loving family who could provide for them. Despite having three biological children of their own, the family provided a stable home for the Torres children for two years.

After the two years, Torres’ younger sister was adopted, while the others were sent to an orphanage for a year until they were taken in by the Davis family. The Davis family already had four adopted children, but wanted three more. It was a perfect fit. After almost 10 years together, they were officially adopted in November of 2004.

Torres is the first person in his family to reach the college level and is proud to pave the way for the rest of his siblings. In his basketball career, he has appeared in 51 games for the Red Hawks and holds the single-season record for three-point field goals with 57 set in 2006. In his spare time away from basketball, Torres volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and tutors middle school children. He is currently the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

“Mo’s contributions to our team and program extend beyond basketball,” said Montclair State head coach Ted Fiore. “His leadership and work ethic never go unnoticed and those qualities serve as an inspiration to his teammates and our staff.”

During the 2006-07 academic year, Torres was featured as one of the 12 persons in the “Real Men of MSU” calendar was designed to educate the community by representing positive male role models who respect and support women and are willing to take a stand regarding violence against women. The program is sponsored by the Center for Non-Violence and Prevention Programs at Montclair State University.

"Maurice is a great young man. His accomplishments are impressive, especially in light of his difficult early years," said Director of Athletics Holly Gera. "Maurice works hard, on and off the court, and we are extremely proud that he wear a Montclair State University uniform. It is our privilege to know him."
