STOCKTON'S JULIEN HONORED FOR SERVICE ON MLK JR. DAY

GALLOWAY--Richard Stockton head softball coach Val Julien received the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Community Engagement Award at the College’s Eighth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 16. Julien received the award for her long-standing commitment to community service both on-campus and off-campus.

Throughout her 25 years as Stockton’s head softball coach, Julien and her players have consistently participated in a variety of community service projects.  The Ospreys annually volunteer at South Jersey Field of Dreams and visit local elementary schools on Read Across America Day. 

Over the years, Julien and her team also have adopted families as part of The Arc of Atlantic County Holiday Partners program, assisted with the New Jersey Special Olympics track meet and participated in Stockton’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service activities.

Julien has served as co-chair of Stockton’s volunteer effort at the ShopRite LPGA Classic for several years.  In addition, her team annually participates in the distribution of beverages and staffing of the concession stands during the tournament.  Last year, the Ospreys donated their tips from the event to The Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey.

Julien also assists with the annual Stockton College Golf Classic, a scholarship fund-raiser sponsored by the Stockton College Foundation.  Under her direction, the softball team and coaching staff performs a variety of functions during the golf outing to help ensure its success each year.

Julien has won 438 games and led her teams to nine ECAC tournament berths in 25 seasons as Stockton’s head softball coach.  She is the longest-serving softball coach in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and she was inducted into the New Jersey ASA Hall of Fame in 2008.
