UNION--The Kean football team continues its efforts to give back to the local communities, as they volunteered as part of the Clean Ocean Action’s Beach Sweeps in Monmouth County on April 24. It was the third straight year the Cougars participated in the clean-up efforts, as 16 players and three members of the coaching staff helped remove debris from Baywalk at Beachway and Laurel Avenues in Keansburg.
The Cougars were at one of the more than 70 sites in six different counties across the state as part of the bi-annual clean-up.
Under fourth year head coach Dan Garrett, the Cougar football team has volunteered their time and efforts at several community service projects this semester. In March, the team participated in the National Education Association’s Read Across America day and also volunteered at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
Clean Ocean Action's Beach Sweeps are one of the longest running clean-ups in the world. The first clean-up first started in 1985 at Sandy Hook with 75 volunteers. Today, this bi-annual event includes beaches, rivers, lakes, streams and underwater clean-ups, with 2010 marking the 25th anniversary of the clean-up. Since 1985, over 70,000 volunteers have participated and removed over three million pieces of debris from beaches and waterways around the state of New Jersey.
