There's no doubt the NJAC boasts some extremely talented athletes but we want fans to know that there's more to these athletes than just their accomplishments on the field, court, etc. The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight highlights one student-athlete each Friday.
The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight for the week ending October 24th comes from Montclair State University. A senior women's basketball player from Kearny, NJ, Janitza Aquino is pursuing a degree in Justice Studies.

What made you choose your institution?
The atmosphere, the coaches, my bestfriend and the fact that it was close enough to my hometown so all of my family and supporters can come watch me play.
What made you want to become a DIII collegiate athlete?
What made me want to become a DIII collegiate athlete was the fact that we don't get paid to play, we play because we love the sport. Day in and day out we are giving everything we have. That's what makes d3 so competitive. When you're on a scholarship, you risk losing that each day and your spot is yours until you lose it. With Division III, everyone is constantly battling to be the best; no scholarships, no money... we play because we all want to be the best and we all want to win.
What was your first memory of playing your sport?
The second I touched the basketball and everyone saw the potential I had, that's when I knew that basketball is what I wanted to do
What has been the greatest or most memorable moment of your experience as a collegiate athlete?
My most memorable moment was during my junior season when I hit the game-winning 3 pointer to win the NJAC championship for the second year in a row.
Do you have any pre-game rituals? If so, what are they?
Before every game I get into my own thoughts and thank God for putting me here and ask that we have a healthy, successful game.
What famous athlete do you look up to and why?
Dwyane wade because he is a family man and no matter how much older he gets, he knows when to carry his team on his back despite if he's healthy or not. He knows when it's time to come to play and takeover the game!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I hope to find myself working in the law enforcement industry.
What is your favorite part about being an NJAC student-athlete?
The conference is so competitive and it cares about it's athletes on and off the court/field.
What is your biggest accomplishment OFF the field, court, etc.?
My biggest accomplishment has been getting a 3.0 GPA because school is a struggle for me, but that's why I love being a part of Montclair State. They will go above and beyond to help wherever they can.
